Welcome to the digivation archives! Between 2006 and 2009, digivation.net served as a creative outlet for Matthew Smith and, on occasion, Michael Chappel. Since 2010 or so, both Michael and Matthew have been preoccupied with other persuits and digivation has fallen into disuse. While the digivation.net domain is being repurposed for other things, this archive will serve to keep the content available for posterity.

Hey Ma, I Failed Engrish – For the Twelfth Time!

As some dedicated readers may recall, I work at a local computer store from time to time, usually in a sales/customer service capacity. You may also recall that I live in Macon with its fabulously ghetto population in eternal tango with the wealthy few that live dispersed around the city.
And, as with many other funny stories, the ghetto-ness will occasionally rear its head and vomit up a funny story. Today’s tale actually involves a letter (ahem, Business Letter) recently received from what appears to be a local accounting firm. I think the following needs no explanation. Please be aware that this is taken directly from the letter. I only wish I could disclose the origins of said letter…

Google Notebook Out Now

As of 2:30 AM (at least that’s the first time I was able to access it), Google Notebook is now live. I was too busy playing with it last night to post, but go forth and enjoy!

Why flowing layouts actually ARE cool

In recent months and years, I have noticed a move toward “fixed width” layouts. Apparently it’s now cool for a website to define a specific pixel width for all pages despite the user’s needs. I remember a time when a web page layout would “flow” with changes in the width of a browser window, but apparently the widespread use of larger displays and higher screen resolutions has fooled webdesigners into employing fixed-width layouts.

A Job and a Tablet

Today I write to you from one intriguing new computing innovation to bring you astoundingly wonderful news: I have a new job! Today I received “the call” from Emerson informing me that the job is mine. I must simply complete the physical on Tuesday and I’m good to go; I could start as early as Monday the 22nd.

Christian Nudists / Derriere Advertising

Editorial Note: This is a repost from a previous entry that appeared on digivation before my server crashed. It seems to be one of the most looked for articles here, so I am copying this back over from an archive. Originally posted 12.25.2005:

Layout Progress

Contrary to popular opinion, I have not yet forgotten, given up on, or otherwise abandoned my dreams of creating a custom digivation template to adorn these lonely posts. Indeed, I’m actually working on it today (seeing as how I actually have a little free time for the first time in weeks). Hang around for updates; I’m currently sketching my idea.

del.icio.us

I know I’m a little behind the times. Maybe I’m a bit hard-headed at times, or a little over “I can do it MY way.” I’ve known about del.icio.us since sometime near its inception but simply refused to use it. Fine fine, take it easy – I’ve finally converted, seeing as how my extensive collection of online bookmarks vanished into cyberspace with the [rest of my website][1]. I am now in the process of populating my bookmarks page; if you happen to dig things like that, you can find me here. I’m sure I’ll run across more nifty uses for del.icios.us soon.

WordPress Widgets

A cool new feature for WordPress – the sidebar Widget. Distributed as an easy to install plugin for WordPress, these spiffy new gadgets provide easy customization of the sidebar (that thing with links to site sections, login, registration, etc). Prior to the release of the Widget plugin, sidebar customization involved hand editing of the current site theme. Now from the comfort of a nice AJAX interface, I can add and rearrange new content on the sidebar. Cool.

Still Busy

Yes, dear readers, I’m still desperately busy. I will post eventually… for now, check out Dave’s blog, listen to some music, chill, then head over to mandolux for some nice wallpapers. Afterwards, a nice tall glass of water and a short run should be just the ticket. The only real thing I have to report today is my acceptance to Google Analytics, and my integration of the service into this blog. Looks really cool – I’ll let you know how that works out for me. Now, its off to lab – I get to program a Motorola 68HC12 microcontroller to count the number of times that a certain switch is pressed – in ASSEMBLER!!

The Toils of Life

My sincerest apologies to everyone for the tremendous lack of updates. Life has been rather hurried over the past few days, hindering my attempts at an update, redesign, or any other web related task. I hope to refocus and get these things completed .. eventually. As always, stay tuned!

That’s Why You Don’t Fuck Around

I always hate it when mother is right. “Cursing is something trashy people do,” “You should date around – you’re still in highschool,” “Don’t speed, you’ll get a ticket,” and countless other tid-bits of advice come to mind (all brushed off to be regretted later). It’s painful when I do something, then stop short as the little voice in the back of my head whispers “Mom was right – again.”

French to Possibly Make Smart Move

As many of you may know, I (among many others) am not a fan of DRM, a technology commonly employed to remove users’ fair use rights as related to digital media. In recent news [via], the French (of all people) have proposed a new law that could potentially make it legal for users to circumvent DRM – direct opposition to the DMCA laws in the USA. I must say, I’m impressed.

LifeBlog?

It would seem that lunch break serves as a playground for mental stimulation. Revelation of the day: I can use the voice memo feature of my phone to hash out new ideas on the run, then return to my desk in the evening to editorialize them here. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before and I’m sure someone else has thought of done this already; despite these setbacks, I will attempt to employ this concept ASAP. Why “lifeblog?” Well its simple, really. I always have some commentary that pops into my head throughout the day (usually related to some life occurance) but by the time I am able to share my thought with you, its already vanished into a haze of misfired neurons. Problem Solved – hang on tight!

Information Overload

So I’ve spent the better part of the afternoon surfing some of the high profile blogs out there, such as PhotoMatt and Warpspire, in search of design inspiration. Of course these travels involved many side trips into other cool upcoming services. Some of the more wonderful ones out there include 30boxes (calandaring) and Upcoming.org (event management) – and so many more! The web is finally moving into a huge social network, connecting people and ideas in ways never before dreamed of. Oh, I’m too excited.

First Ride of the Year

Ladies and gentlemen, it is now March. Time to don your wetsuit and head out to the lake for a little pre-season wakeboarding action. Yesterday I hopped in the jeep and rode out to the lake for a little warm up run before the weather gets warm enough to bring ladies. I was surprised at how quickly I recalled the skills acquired this past summer; this bodes well for the upcoming season. Maybe by next December I’ll be busting out with a full backroll.
